Which split is fair?

Splitting by income means you each give up the same share of what you earn. If one of you earns 60 % of the total, they pay 60 % of rent, food and bills.

Splitting 50/50 feels equal, but when incomes differ a lot, the one who earns less can end up with almost nothing left while the other saves.

Same left over goes furthest: you share everything so you both have the same to spend. It suits couples who see all money as shared.

Frequently asked questions

Should couples split bills 50/50?

Only if you earn about the same. With different incomes, splitting by income is usually seen as fairer, because you each pay the same share of what you earn.

What counts as income?

Use take-home pay after tax, plus regular benefits. Bonuses and irregular income can be averaged per month.

Can we mix ways of splitting?

Yes. In Fairhem you choose per cost: rent by income, streaming 50/50, the car paid by one person.
